The Mission

The signal was strong but one could get headache from all that sand and its effect on the
transmission.
Because all you could see was sand.
Until suddenly the camera was rearranged and showed a big grey building.
It consisted of something that looked like a big egg, which was immersed in the sand and 4
towers with heavy cannons and anti-air weaponry.
Simultaneously a flow with some data about the energy flux inside of the building and strange
electromagnetic fields appeared on the side of the display.
“I hid here for 4 days scanning this…thing. It seems to be a factory, considering the high amount of
energy use and the daily resource convoys, but I just can’t figure out(,) what they produce.” A voice
said.
“Every day at noon there's a convoy of three armored transporters, hovercraft, because
of the sand. They enter at the front entrance…I could see many gua….Fuck!” The end he shouted,
and soon the viewer knew why.
One of the 4 Cannons was readjusting right now. At the position of the camera.
“Damn, they triangulated the transmission, gotta run” said the voice and grabbed the camera. The
soldier ran a few steps, but then there was a giant boom and (maybe) a second later a giant explosion
shred the soldier, his camera, with this the transmission and the whole dune he hid in into dust.

The screen at the briefing room went black.
“This data arrived here yesterday, they were recorded on Hurrzaan the home planet of the Gorn
species, as you should know”, General Varos said. He stood next to the screen and looked at the
soldiers (you+ a few others), sitting at the big table.
“You were specially elected by captain Corwin here…” he pointed with his hand to the captain, who
sat at the rear end of the table “…to inspect this building, gather useful data and if it’s a threat to
destroy it. Captain Corwin will now proceed to relate his plan.” With these words the general
stepped aside and the captain stood up and walked to the screen.
“My plan is quite simple: we dive into the atmosphere with a few drop ships, with orbital
bombardment from the battle cruiser as backup if necessary. We intercept the convoy a few miles
before they reach the factory; we kill the gorn, take over the transporters and as soon as we are inside, we search
for a map and look what we got there. If we encounter…problems, they’re allowed to be erased.”
Corwin was finished “Any more questions?”

Darwin leaned back comfotable in her chair and tapped the tips of her claws against one another. She had gotten used to these more slack and casual demeanours during her time with the earth's army. She listened closely to what General Varos and Captain Corwin had to say, as she simultaneously scanned all the other people in the room with her eyes.
Were these supposed to be her Squadmates for the upcoming mission? She squinnied her eyes in disbelief as she recognized there was a Tetra and several Gorn amongst them. Gorn... well okay, this was a mission that involved their people directly, so it was only natural some of these reptiles were present, but what was a Tetra doing here? She couldn't see why they would team her up with one of those. It was a personal offence!
She turned her face towards the Captain, as she knew it wouldn't be wise to show her disapproval too openly. "So, what you suggest is, that we impersonate the drivers of the convoy, and thus gain entrance to the building undetected? Is this a stealth mission? And also...“ she took a quick glimpse at one of the Gorn, which were present here. „...isn't this a Gorn-Affair? Why does the earth have to interfere?“

Serene sat there and listened as good as possible. She still had problems with those impersonal and all-objective conferences in the army. Before joining the army, or as she prefers to say, before being forced to join the army - however - if somebody wanted something from her or wanted to explain something to her - something like an operation - they had to explain it very clearly and personally, so that she understood what she had to do. She wasn't used to those speakings, wasn't used to filter the things she had to do, from the things, others had to do. But after a short thinking she understood. it didn't seem to be that complicated. Corvin asked, if there were any questions left? Hmm... Starting with the 'Where exactly', the 'When' and the 'How' So, yes, there where questions left. A few miles was like somewhere between the equator and the Northpole, though she didn't know, whether this planet had a pole or an equator, or at least, whether they had the same names. She doubted it. And she supposed, that they were going to start the operation with the next convoy, which was said to be at noon, but the 'when' was very much related to the 'where' and the 'how fast is the Convoy?'.

She watched her crew-mates carefully, a female savaroi had a question. "...Why does the earth have to interfere?" The earth interferes, where the earth interferes, she thought. Well, a Savaroi may not know this, but it was so earthlike, to do what they pleased. And if they please to walk upon Hurrzaan, who'd be in the position to hold them back. She didn't let the Captain any time to answer, and asked her question. He asked for questions, so it may be best, if all question are asked as early as possible.

"How are we supposed to get inside? I mean, as I understood, we have to take over the convoy, drive it in the building an so on... But there are guards around the convoy ...with weapons, no? So it may need some time, to take over the convoy. I can't believe, they won't be able, to warn their superiors. And if they warn them, we're not going to get in, right?" She spoke in a flat british dialect, that will not suit her kind of rude appearance, but somewhere beneath the british was a slight roman accent, too slight to guess the exact origin.

There were 100 Places in Universe where Dr Loukaz Ramus would had prefered to be right now, the technical developmentcenter of Earth was one of them. But that was not the reason why he was here. Captain Corwin was the reason, Ramus was chosen with some others for a special Mission, a special Mission on Hurrzaan, home planet of Gorn. Ah-huh, nice.
He didnt really listened to this General but noticed that glance of the Savaroilady to him. He scratched his belly with his long claws to flirt with her in a Eũkeraway and grined. She didnt noticed or at least she didnt reacted. Instead she asked:
„...isn't this a Gorn-Affair? Why does the earth have to interfere?" Too bad.

"How are we supposed to get inside? I mean, as I understood, we have to take over the convoy, drive it in the building an so on... But there are guards around the convoy ...with weapons, no? So it may need some time, to take over the convoy. I can't believe, they won't be able, to warn their superiors. And if they warn them, we're not going to get in, right?"
This question came from a female human child.
Now it was his turn: „When does the party start, Captain?“

A special mission… to Hurrzaan. Irasem knew why he was chosen to go there. The conditions this planet brings with it won’t be any problem for him. He listened attentively to what the superiors had to say and nodded every once in a while. The beginning of the mission would be rather relaxing for him. There was no work for a Heavy Soldier like him. They wanted to take over the convoy and take the drivers as hostages – what was there to do for him? Well, by any chance he could blow everything up in the end. And maybe he wouldn’t have to wait too long. Even if they think to allow for all possibilities, there always happens something unexpected.
Some of his team-mates-to-be even had questions. Very good. It was much better to ask now. In battle, there was no more time for things like that. Hopefully everyone thought so. Well, this was a special mission, so there shouldn’t be any greenhorns around here. Though, there are questions a soldier doesn’t have to ask. Why does earth interfere? Gosh… Because they want to? Because they have to? What does it matter? Irasem shot a glance at the Savaroi and slightly shook his head.
He waited until the others had asked their questions. “Sir”, he said to sum things up. “We need more details about the exact procedure. Will we be introduced right here or on the way to Hurrzaan, sir?”

Captain Corwin folded his arms and grinned ad he heard the questions.
"Good good..." he said and looked smilingly towards the Savaroi. “Sergeant cin Varencegal this is not a stealth mission, we only want to get in without having 4 Anti air cannons targeting us and I may remind you that you're a soldier, no politician thus the answer to your question is needless"
Then he turned towards the Girl who had the next question. "The communication systems of the convoy are no problem. Each drop ship carries an interfering transmitter and a short term EMP cannon. The EMP will provide us a time frame to capture the convoy, round about 10 minutes, without giving them the possibility to escape, by shutting down their engines and controls. If it takes longer than 10 minutes the interfering transmitter will at least jam their communications.”
He glanced to the Gorn. “We have six drop ships each with five Soldiers, each five man form a squad the Soldiers cin Varencegal, Bianco, Ramus…” he nodded towards the Tetra “and Irasem here are in my squad” Then he assigned the other to their groups. “We will surround the convoy, giving them a chance to surrender. If they deny every soldier, except the drivers has to be detained or killed. Every transporter will be taken over by a squad; the three remaining squads will stay out of sight. As soon as we’re inside we will take out the main cannons and opening the gates, so the backup is able to enter the building.” While Corwin was talking he was looking every soldier right into the eyes.
“And to answer the last question, we start tomorrow at 4am.” He glanced at the clock which showed that it was 6pm “We will enter the battle cruiser then at Dock H-13 we will reach Hurrzaan after a twelve hour flight and then we start the real “party”” Corwin looked to General Varos “Other questions will be answered at the flight. Dismiss!”

(Ihr habt nun die Möglichkeit auf euer Quartier zu gehen und eure Ausrüstung zusammenzupacken, auf den Schießstand zu gehen, die Freizeiträume der normalen Soldaten mit Billard etc. zu besuchen oder etwas in der Messe zu essen, sobald ihr schlafen geht wird auf den Aufbruch geskippt)

Darwin glanced at the captain in anger. Who did this human think he was, just waiving her question like that. For a moment, she felt like rebuking this insolent human and putting him in his place.
But this was not Athalon anymore. Even if it seemed highly illogical and wrong, this man was actualy HER superior. It wouldn't be worth the trouble to give him a piece of her mind. Instead, she settled for glaring at him angrily and not saying another word.
The captain continued answering their questions, and eventualy announced the roster of this missions Squads. As she heard that she would have to work together with the Tetra and one of the Gorn, she was once again on the edge of her seat, just about to start complaining. But once again, what use was it? As long as she was a part of this military, she'd have to settle for this outrageous kind of treatment she was experiencing.

After they were dismissed, she hurrried up and left the room as fast as she could. This mission would be another highly inconvenient experience for her, another proove for how much she did not belong here. It'd be a long time till she could get used to Earth... if that should ever happen.
Darwin headed for her quarters, as she did not want to put up with any more strange people right now. She needed to be alone for the moment.

Irasem absorbed the information Captain Corwin gave them, answering the questions. He could already see the drop ships and the convoy in his mind’s eye.
It was announced he was to be in the Captain’s squad. The three others being the Savaroi girl called cin Varencegal, Bianco and the Tetra, whose name was Ramus. So they wouldn’t be the QRF, as it seemed. Irasem didn’t understand why the superiors mixed the squads up like this – he was used to work with other Heavies or Soldiers at least. By all means, the Captain will know what he does.
The departure was set at 4 am the next day. As they were dismissed, Irasem headed straight to his quarters. He needed to be fit of the mission. And who knew when he’ll get the next chance to sleep for more than two hours?

After the captains explanations and awnsers it seemed like the Savaroi and the Gorn liked to go straightly to their cabins to relax and be alone.
Oh well, great - Dr Ramus thought and launched a digital libary on his Tablet PC.
Savaroi, Gorn and Humans, thats more than perfect - he murred and added voiceless while scratching his chin - thats stupid.
While he was searching the libary he took a big, already begun cigar and started to smoke, not carering that his Superiors still were there.
On his years working with the human species he was very familar with their anatomy and stuff. For Savaroi and Gorn he felt much comfortable to backup a bit. This was going to be a long night.

Twelve-hour-flight... sounds as if she needed a cop of Coffee in the morning, an a little sleep before. But nine hours was surely too much, as if she could only spend it with sleeping and breakfast. There was no church around, no holy place or something like that, where she might spend an hour ... or two. This ship she now lived in, seemed to be the most profane place, she's ever been to. But maybe it was good enough for god, if she just prayed in her room. And even if not, she doubted, whether the auld man would care.
She watched some of them leaving the room, among them, Savaroi called cin something, who was assigned to her team and one of the Gorns, who as she understood, was also assigned to her team, a guy called Irasem. She wriggled in her seat and turned around to watch the remaining. "somebody playing billiard?", she than asked with little hope.

After the Dissmiss of the Group, Corwin spoke a few words with the General, but too quiet so nobody else could hear them, and then left towards the shooting range. Varos left too, but towards his Office.

Most of the Soldiers left and although Sergeant Bianco asked for a round of Billards no one really were in the mood for that.

Serene never thought that many of her comrades would except her billard-challenge, and if she was honest, she wasn't even in the right mood to play. But otherwise she didn't expect, that not even a single guy would ... would react. If they just said something like 'sorry, don't want to' or 'I'm to tired', okay, but they completely ignored her. Thus she felt a little offended, while her eyes went from one guy to the next - not that there where many guys left, barely enough to play around of billiard, but they where right enough to give everybody a not to long not to short evil eye. "Fuckin' coward bastards", she mumbled a little bitchy, "don't even have the heart to play against a girl, or to even talk to a girl. Not that there are many others around. Maybe you like stiff 'n exact Savaroi-lady a little more." She said this more to herself than to a certain guy, and wasn't even sure if they'd understand her.
She than waved in the round and left her place, not sure if she will go to bed or do something in her room.

After everybody left the room, Ramus started to feel, something like lonely in the cold meeting room. And everytime he felt lonely in a cold meeting room like this he started to miss his homeplanet, his the splinter of green on which he was born.
A whole hour later, he finaly decided to go to his room.

It was still dark and damn cold when the Soldiers had to be at the Dock. Clouds were in the Sky and it rained lightly. The ferry shuttle, that had the job to bring them to the Battle cruiser in the Sky, had already berthed. It wasn't big, but all Soldiers would fit into the Shuttle with the flowing form.
Corwin and the other high rank Soldiers were already on the cruiser, so they only were welcomed by an AI that told them to buckle up and that they were heading to the EBC Skysurfer.
The Engines started and with the mumbling of the jetfire they flew upwards leaving the surface with the high Skyscrapers and dense traffic.
As they left the atmosphere the Battle cruiser came in sight. It looked basically like a big cylinder, changing it's diameter, so the front was slightly bigger and ended in a point. the end wasn't cylindrical, it was a rectangular shape with 5 giant Jets, that could thrust out giant blue jet streams.
The ferry berthed at the battle cruiser and the Soldiers entered their Home for the next 12 Hours.
They got their chambers assigned through the loudspeakers implemented in the walls. Corwins squad was assigned to Block C Sergeant Bianco got Chamber 1, then came cin Varencegal, Ramus and finally Irasem. Then they were dismissed.

(Das Schiff bietet dieselben Möglichkeiten wie die Kaserne, Schießstände, mehrere Mensas und Freizeiträume. Während ich weg bin, dürft ihr euch frei auf dem Schiff bewegen und habt auch die Erlaubnis NPCs zu erstellen, allerdings keine höherrangigen, sondern nur Soldaten wie ihr oder Schiffspersonal. The next day, it was time to start their voyage to their missions destination. Darwin got up pretty early, so that she could take a shower before heading for their mission. The fur took a long time to dry, so she always had to get up really early, if she wanted to take in shower in the morning. After she was done with the packing and all, she went to their shuttle early, and waited for their start.
Luckily, Corwin was not on board, so she wouldn't have to put up with that guy this early in the morning. Instead, they were greeted by an A.I., which was fascinating. Darwin payed close attention to it, as she was fascinated by the disembodied voice, trying to understand how it thought and reacted. With the way more primitive A.I.s on Athalon, it was rather easy to find bugs, or to make them behave funny by confronting them with the right questions, but this one seemed much more advanced. Also, talking to the A.I. gave her a good reason to disregrad the aliens traveling together with her. Sadly, the flight was too short for her to find any bugs or exploits in the A.I., which left her kind of impressed and statisfied, seeing how well earths technology was working. She even had the feeling, that the A.I. had looked through her intention and was itself teasing her a bit with it's replies.

Thus putting her in a somewhat better mood than yesterday (which she did not show outwardly), Darwin felt more like spending some time together with the humans. After quickly storing her stuff in the chamber that had been assigned to her, she went for one of the leisure rooms, seeing if there would be someone to talk to, or play a round of Darts or Billard with. She kind of hoped to find that woman that was part of her Squad,... Bianco? Was that her name?... ,since she hoped to get to know her better before the mission. At least, she was the only one she had some hope of being able to get along with. The other members of her Squad were either Corwin, or Aliens.

Serene, since she hated waking up to early in the morning, did her packing and everything the evening before. But regardless of wether she's already done everything before she got in a hurry the next morning, when she woke up a little late. Thus she still felt tired when she rushed towards the shuttle this morning, what gave her no nerves to spent any attention to the mechanical voice of an A.I. After been welcomed and assigned to a room, she felt in her new bed for an hour. She didn't even have the time to realize, that her new home was number one, which may have let her feel a bit satisfied, nor where her new comrades will stay the next day.

After an lucrative hour of sleep she woke up much easier. She didn't even think about unpacking her stuff and left the room - that was the moment she realized, she's got room number one, which let her smile for an instant "Number 1 for number 1", she locked the door and left the corridor towards one - she hoped it was the closest - of the leisure rooms.

Irasem was well rested as he got up. He wondered what this mission would bring. It was the first time to step on Hurrzaan ground after three years… He had mixed feelings. At least the planet was huge, so the likelihood of meeting… No. Shaking his head he dissipated these thoughts. There was a mission to fulfil. And to be honest he had a feeling of anticipation – be it his home planet or not.
Outside it was cold. Okay. And dark. Okay. And it rained… not okay. Sandstorms are fine, but rain… It was not the point of getting wet. His scales protected him well against any kind of weather. Maybe it was because Irasem’s not used to water. There was never much water on Hurrzaan. And there was no need for water to exist in great amounts. Especially not in the air falling down on him.
It didn’t take long to reach the EBC Skysurfer with the shuttle. The captain’s squad was assigned to block C and Irasem headed to chamber four as soon as they were dismissed. He sat on the bed and wondered what to do next. Twelve hours had to be killed.
First he recalled what he already knew about the mission. He nodded. Yes, that was fine. Albeit he still had no clue why his squad had such completely different members. Maybe he should spend some time with them, it could come in handy to know them. So Irasem went to the leisure rooms. There he stuck his head in at the first door to see if there was someone inside he knew. And he was lucky. He recognised cin Varencegal – what kind of name is that anyway? – and went in the room. But instead of meeting up with her he took a seat near a dart board. Irasem was not the conversational type. He preferred keeping some distance. Thus he could watch people of interest and keep an eye on the whole situation. This should be interesting, especially because there were so many different races together.

Darwin did not find Bianco in the leisure room, what a pity... She took a seat and thought about getting a drink for a while, but discarded that ides quickly. It wouldn't be very clever to start drinking that short before a mission. So she just spent some time waiting and watching the other soldiers.
After a while, one of her Squadmates entered the room as well, it was the Gorn. Darwin glared at him, derogatory and disapointed. She did not want to talk to that one. Luckily, he did not inist on talking to her, and instead took a seat near one of the dartboards. For a moment, Darwin thought about leaving the room, but that would have looked too capitulating. She wouldn't have someone like him drive her away just like that.
So she remained where she was, and avoided looking into the Gorns direction as good as she could. After another 45 minutes approximately, finaly, Bianco entered the leisure room. Darwin immediately woke up from her straying thoughts, and looked at the human. Was about time she showed up, wasn't it? Darwin had gotten bored a long time ago. Trying to smile friendly (but not really suceeding in), she waved the woman nearer, to signalize her, that she would like to talk.

Someone doesn't need to be a genius, to see, that this woman, cin something thought herself to be something special. Maybe she just liked humans and disliked everybody else, which would include her, because to see, that she was everything but human, you don't need to be a genius either, or she was, what other people as Serene would call arrogant, and what she'd call bitchy. And Serene supposed the second suggestion to be more likely. However the Moment Serene popped into the room, the wolf-girl-something beckoned her over. There was another guy in the room, the gorn with the much easier name than the savaroi's name, what didn't make her remember it at all... Irasmus? no, she thought, guess I mixed the names up a bit... However, after this guy didn't seem to give a damn about her appearance, she didn't need to care about, whether his name was Irasmus or Ireland - and yes, she was well aware of the fact, that this was a country.

Only the cin-Girl left to talk with... Hooray. But at first she walked right past the cin-Girl towards the mini-bar, where her hand - with out her permission - grabbed a bottle of beer. Having the cold drink in her hands, she stopped for an instant. This may not seem very lady-like and thus may cause a bad first impression to her new comrades. Not that 'drinking-alcohole-in-the-morning' wasn't reason enough for a bad first impression. After a second she decided to take vine instead. Tastes much better anyway... The bottle in her hand, she turned towards the cin-Girl. "Do you want something as well?", she asked with her strange british accent that doesn't want to fit to her.

Cin Varencegal ignored him. That was fine. However, the glare she had darted at Irasem as he came in said more than a hundred words. They still had to work together, may she like it or not. He hoped she’d be reasonable enough to realise that and to hold her feelings at bay.
It didn’t happen much for the next time. The Savaroi seemed to be bored while other soldiers spent their time playing billiard, dart or card games. Irasem recognised some people he saw at the mission briefing yesterday. He didn’t even know their names and since they were not in his squad there was no need to know them either.
After some time, Bianco entered the room. Apparently, the Savaroi had just been waiting for her. She got up and waved her to come for a chat, but the human walked right past her and towards the bar. Irasem had to admit he was disappointed. Beer. Oh no, wine. It didn’t make a difference. An inviting gesture by the girl implied that cin Varencegal was welcome to join her.
Irasem was on the fence. Should he wait how the Savaroi would react and hope she was clever enough not to drink something? Or should he make sure his squad would be all sober by taking the action and joining them? Since the Savaroi hated him already he couldn’t lose much sympathy there. Bianco, however, had just ignored him. So at best she didn’t hate him… yet.
He decided to await what was coming next. If they really got glasses – hopefully they wouldn’t drink right out of the bottle, at least it was wine now – he could still take action. And if not… Maybe these women were hard-drinking. Pfff.

Darwin was disappointed at first, when Bianco walked past her. But she came back, and offered her some wine. "Do you want something as well?" she asked. Darwin looked at the bottle scepticaly. Her reason was fighting with her desire for a drink, and with her wish to make a good first impression on Bianco. In the end, her reason won though. "Thank you, but we shouldn't be drinking before a mission. Let's save the drinks for later, for the victory-celebration." she added short but confident smile to her words, just before her expression turned serious again.
With one hand, she made a gesture towards the bench seat opposite of her. "Take a seat." she said, friendly, but also somewhat peremptory. "So... your name's Bianco, right? I believe we've been assigned to the same Squad." Those were empty words without any meaning, but the rules of conversation dictated, that this was how a chat between equals had to be started. Darwin never saw much sense in such empty phrases, but she knew how to lead a conversation.

Cin diceded not to drink, and somehow Serene felt as if the Savaroi also forbid her to drink... Actually twelve hours should well be enough to recover from a glass of vine. Eh, Okay, maybe her comrades would feel much better if she hasn't drunk anything before, when they sit in a plane flown by her. Fine... She glanced to the gorn, who didn't seem very happy with her drinking something and thus was unlikely about to drink something with her. With a bitter smile she putted the bottle back in the mini bar and took a o.5l-bottle of water instead.

She sat down where cin offered her a seat."So... your name's Bianco, right? I believe we've been assigned to the same Squad", that was quite obvious, she thought. "I think, that's a fact", she commented, "'n yes I'm Bianco, but you may call me Serene. I do not want to die in a lot, that doesn't even know my frist-name. And you are cin Varen...? Sorry but your name is quite complicated, isn't it?" She took a sip from her bottle.

Luckily the girls decided not to drink anything. The human grabbed a bottle of water instead and they sat down.
Now the situation became a little complicated for Irasem. On the one hand he wanted to know more about these two, but on the other hand it were bad manners to eavesdrop their conversation. He would have joined them, if it wasn’t for cin Varencegal. My his judgement she could even run off, if he only came close… And that was truly not what he wanted.
Thus he decided to let them be and to keep watching the other people. That’s always interesting. Maybe he would play billiard later, but right now he wasn’t in the mood. And maybe he could pick up a little bit of the girls conversation… Not that he was going to pry about! He just wanted to get to know his squad mates without chasing them away.

The girl remained reasonable, and decided to replace the Bottle of wine with water. As she sat down, she answered her: "I think, that's a fact. n yes I'm Bianco, but you may call me Serene. I do not want to die in a lot, that doesn't even know my frist-name. And you are cin Varen...? Sorry but your name is quite complicated, isn't it?"
"Varencegal." Darwin explained with a neutral expression, even though she felt slightly offended, since Bianco had forgotten her name, even though it was not a big deal. "Darwin cin Varencegal. I suppose it might be a bit complicated for earth standards, but it's a perfectly matching name among the more sophisticated tiers of the savaroi society." She still felt a little wounded from Biancos disregard of her name, and felt the need to show her how important she was. As she talked, she had a close eye on that Gorn. She was statisfied to see, that he did not seem to have any plans of joining their table.

She realized, that DArwin felt offended by her bad memory for names. Hell! As if this was something she did on purpose. Sure, if she could, she would gladly fill her head up with all the names. But she wasn't able to. And if Darwin was honest to herself "DArwin cin Varencegal" was a hell of a name. Okay a second later DArwin admitted, that her name was complicated for earth standards. Serene decided to ignore her ostentatiousness. she wasn't on Athalon now, thus such stuff shouldn't be of great importance. however Serene had her difficulties with ignoring things. "So?", she asked unintentionally catty, "I think Bianco is also very often appearing in higher society" she continued, sounding more ironic than she actually planned to.
